Adding Thickness to Fractures
For many application in DFNE it is not necessary to add thickness prior to processing since often the factor of thickness can directly be incorporated into the calculations such as in computing conductance for pipe model, however, wherever needed, it is quite straightforward to do so.
A simple procedure is demonstrated below. For every fracture, the fracture polygon is copied twice on both sides of the fracture polygon. Corresponding vertices are then connected to create side polygons.
The procedure described can easily scaled to accommodate larger DFN models. The following example shows a DFN with 10,000 fractures and the resulting thickened DFN model (over than 200,000 polygons).
